History of Frames
Although the history of paintings is as
old as the evolution of mankind, the history of frames dates back to later
stages of prehistoric era. In the prehistoric era the pictures did not have
frames. Predominant subjects like every day hunting were painted directly on
the walls of caves. Cave painting of Tanzania is a fine example of such an
art. These paintings depict the existence of early acceptance of the idea of
a frame as a way to set off, isolate and distinguish a drawing or painting.
The tradition continued even after the emergence of new form of wall
painting "Fresco" - a painting made on wet plaster.
For centuries, paintings, usually took the form of icons and other
religious works, often painted directly on wood panels and remained
unframed. In medieval period, the frame was still physically a part of the
picture, although the border surrounding a painting might be decorated
separately. The illuminated borders that were painstakingly crafted by monks
to enclose pages of beautifully lettered text, are one of the rare examples
of such an art.
The first recorded instance of frame appeared around the 13th century and
were made to enclose the dominant form of painting of that period. The
church was the subject matter of much of the art created during this period.
During this period, the painter and the frame maker were often the same
person and usually designed and completed the frame before the painting was
finished. These frames often took the form of a triptych three panels
of wood hinged together; the central panel held the main painting and the
two side panels contained a design or painting complimentary to it. These
earliest frames were frequently used as an architectural element for
churches and chapels.
It was during the Renaissance that the disengaged, or wholly separate,
frame was born in Italy. Painters began to see themselves as artists rather
than their employers' servants and saw the frame as an important element in
the pictures, they were engaged in creating. Frames became a practical
necessity for transporting paintings and portraits commissioned by wealthy
patrons. During this period, the work of framing was passed to the
apprentice under the direction of the painter. The changes that began in
Italy, spread to other parts of Europe, but each country developed its owns
style of framing. The carved frames became predominant and the decorative
finishes like marbelling, gliding and use of fabric like silk was seen.
It was during the 17th century, under the strong influence of French, the
art of framing saw an artistic move from churches to monarchy. Here, "virtuosos
of carving" produced vast, three-dimensional sculptural frames for
ceremonial portraits and paintings that were colored with a range of gold
leaf. In this era, frames became the province of designers rather than
artists. Paintings were considered as major components of interior designing
and the furniture designers became the frame makers. Different forms of
framings such as Barouque and Rocco style Regence frames were extremely
popular and reflected the delicacy and opulence. This era is also known as
the golden age of frame making in France.
The 19th century brought about an even more significant change to the art
of frame making. Carvers began to vanish as years of war and national debt
scoured Europe. At the same time, the coming of the Industrial Revolution
turned frame making into a mass-produced industry. Frames could now be
produced faster than hand-carved designs, a variety of forms and motifs
could be implemented and it became more affordable. Composition of material,
the medium of choice provided a vocabulary that no wood carver could have
imagined. By the end of the 19th century, artists started looking frame as
an integral part of the painting as a whole. The interior designers used the
paintings and frames to perfectly blend and compliment the beauty of
interior, adding a new and a modern definition to the frame.
